2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV First Drive:

2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV Premier First Driving Review Highlights:

  • The 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV packs the Bolt’s FWD electric powertrain into a larger SUV-like body
  • Driving the 2022 Bolt EUV around Chicago reveals it’s a composed commuter car with more than enough range for urban use
  • It’s not the sportiest electric crossover, but it’s reasonably priced and easy to use, which is a boon for new EV owners.

Effortless internal combustion speed has quickly become a calling card for electric cars, even non-performance EVs. But in crowded cities like Chicago, where I live, the mind-numbing traffic makes accelerating and high-speed driving almost unnecessary. Yet that’s also where some of the other advantages EVs have over ICE cars come in. And if you live and work in a city, the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV just might convince you to upgrade. electricity.

The 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV is the roomier, larger sibling of the electric sedan SUV (crossover)

When Chevrolet updated the Bolt sedan for 2022, it also gave it a big brother, literally. Like one of its main rivals, the Mustang Mach-E, the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV is technically a crossover, not an SUV. But semantics aside, it’s basically a Bolt with a taller ride height, slightly different styling and a stretched platform. And that stretch gives it more interior space for passengers and cargo.

Because it uses the Bolt’s single-motor electric powertrain, the 2022 Bolt EUV does not offer all-wheel drive. Also, because the electric motor is under the hood, where the engine of a gas-powered Chevy crossover would be, the Bolt EUV has no frunk. However, this is not an oversight. A Chevrolet spokesperson told me that this “allows for better access and it also allows us to maximize the interior space of the vehicle.” Plus, it makes the electric vehicle feel like a gas-powered car, which, as I’ll explain, is part of its mission.

Along with the extra room and taller ride, the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV offers standard roof rails and an optional panoramic sunroof on the Bolt sedan. Also, while the Bolt has 1LT and 2LT versions, the Bolt EUV equivalents are LT and Premier. This latest version costs $4,500 more, but adds things like leather seats, heated and ventilated front seats, adaptive cruise control and rear park assist. Additionally, only the Premier offers GM’s semi-autonomous Super Cruise suite, albeit optional.

It’s not a sporty SUV, but the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV can drive just fine

On paper, the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV isn’t that fast, although it’s not supposed to be either. But it’s not slow either. For one, Car and Driver beat Chevrolet’s 0-60, completing the deed in 6.8 seconds in its Bolt EUV Premier. And second, the hallmark of an electric vehicle is maximum torque at zero revs and no shifting. Even if you don’t shift into Sport mode, this electric SUV/crossover might surprise you with how easily and smoothly it pulls away from a red light.

Plus, you read that right: the Bolt EUV 2022 has a Sport mode. It doesn’t drastically change the driving experience, but it does make the accelerator pedal more responsive. And it injects the steering with more weight, better reflexes and more feedback. Add the battery to the ground and a surprisingly minimal amount of body roll and you have a decent-handling machine.

Keep in mind, however, that these seats aren’t bolstered all that well. But they offer plenty of legroom, especially for the driver and front passenger. And although the sloping roofline limits rear headroom, you can actually fit five adults in the Bolt EUV. Additionally, the Premier has heated rear seats as standard.

Fast corner carving, however, is not what the Bolt EUV is all about. It shines in traffic, maximizing the regenerative braking feedback of the one-pedal drive mode. With its efficiency and fine calibration, it’s no wonder physical EV brakes rust – with the OPD you hardly need it. But if you’re not used to it, press a button to turn it off.

This ease of use is found throughout the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV. The push-button “shifter,” for example, doesn’t just use buttons. Reverse and Drive are drawbars, which means you don’t have to look down to use them. Plus, while the 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system is responsive and easy to use, it also has physical buttons. HVAC controls are also physical. And using Super Cruise, which we’ll cover separately, is basically a three-step process.

But you don’t need it to appreciate the other strengths of the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV. The ride, while slightly firm, smooths even Chicago’s potholes. Also, while the steering is almost too light in normal mode, it’s fine for heavy traffic. Plus, the smooth throttle calibration means you’re not thrown backwards every time you start. Plus, you don’t realize the noise engines make until your car has them. And the circle in the digital instrument cluster that lights up green when you’re saving power encourages you to drive gently.

No, the Bolt EUV 2022 won’t set your hair on fire or make your heart race. But not every car or every trip needs to do this. And it was really nice to get out of a car feeling more relaxed than getting into it. Yes, even in traffic jams.

Will this be my firstMT SUV EV adapted to your needs?

Since Chevrolet is giving the Bolt EUV a price cut for the 2023 model year, getting a 2022 one might seem pointless. However, if you purchase a 2022 Bolt EUV or Bolt, Chevrolet will add a free level 2 home charging station, installation included. This should make life even easier for new VE users. And considering that charging on a level 1 outlet only added about 30 miles in 13 hours, I’d say the level 2 station is worth buying.

On that note, it’s worth noting that I haven’t taken the Bolt EUV on long highway trips. Car and Driver, however, recorded a range of 190 miles in its 75mph highway test. But around town and in the suburbs, where I imagine the Bolt EUVs will spend most of their time, this crossover has more than enough range. In fact, I beat the EPA city rating of 40 mpg-e.

There are other electric crossovers, like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, that offer even more range and space than the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV. However, these electric vehicles also cost more, even before adding some features that Chevy includes as standard. And while the Bolt EUV doesn’t have the craziest styling or the most gimmicks, it also makes it easy to get to know it.

If you want a simple electric commuter vehicle, especially if you’re new to EV life, the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUV is a solid, stress-free option.
