The Ford Expedition is a big SUV that costs over $100 to fill up with gas
The 2022 Ford Expedition has the honor of being number one on Consumer Reports’ list of large SUVs. It is also first on the list of most expensive sport utility vehicles to fill up with gas. The Expedition has a gas tank capacity of 28.3 gallons, making it a good vehicle for long trips. At 453 miles on a tank, you wouldn’t have to stop too often. However, this large Ford SUV returned 16 mpg overall in testing. It managed to get 23 mpg on the highway, but that’s still not great fuel economy. Based on the $4.85 fuel number, it would cost $137 to fill up.
Consumer Reports gave the large SUV above-average scores in the areas of road test and owner satisfaction. Reliability was just average.

The 2022 Chevy Suburban came second on the list of big, expensive SUVs to fill up on gas. The Suburban returned 16 mpg total in testing, which equates to 22 mpg on the highway. Coming in at number four on the list of large SUVs, the Chevy Suburban features a 28-gallon gas tank. This offers 448 miles of range on a full tank and would equate to $136 for a full tank.
Consumer Reports didn’t give the Suburban high marks for reliability. The road test and owner satisfaction were better, however. This also applies to the GMC Yukon XL, which is its mechanical twin.

The Toyota Sequoia is a big SUV that costs over $100 to fill up
Check out the big 2022 Toyota Sequoia SUV. It only gets 15 mpg overall and 21 mpg on the highway, which is lower than the other two options. Additionally, the Toyota SUV only returned 10 mpg in city testing. It managed to secure the second spot on Consumer Reports’ big SUV list. With a 26.4 gallon gas tank and 396 range on a single tank, the Toyota Sequoia costs $128 to fill up.
The Sequoia SUV received high marks for predicted reliability and predicted owner satisfaction. It was just average in the test drive, but big SUVs aren’t known for their agility.

There are still some reliable options on this list, but filling up at the gas station can be a pain. Not all large SUVs are created equal, but sometimes it’s a necessity for larger groups. Consumer Reports suggests that a gas card from a place like Costco, Sam’s Club or BJ’s Warehouse could help save money.
