Trucks are one of the most popular segments of the US automotive market, and electric trucks are coming soon with the ability to disrupt the segment. That being said, one concern some truck enthusiasts have with electric trucks is their off-road capabilities. The good news is that truck enthusiasts shouldn’t worry during the upcoming electric truck wars. There is already an electric truck with more than 10 inches of ground clearance.
Electric trucks like the Ford F-150 Lightning and Rivian R1T have good ground clearance
Currently, the electric truck market is quite empty, as there are only three electric trucks in production. More are coming soon, but at the moment there are only three. Two of these trucks don’t have more than 10 inches of ground clearance, but they’re still up there.
According to Edmunds, the 2022 Rivian R1T has 8.7 inches of ground clearance. The Lightning has a ground clearance of 8.9 inches, which is slightly larger than that of the Rivian.
By comparison, the regular F-150 is about 9.3 inches. That makes the Lightning and R1T numbers average for a pickup truck. That said, an electric pickup truck is already in production with significantly greater ground clearance than even the regular F-150: the GMC Hummer EV.
The 2022 GMC Hummer EV has the most ground clearance of any electric truck right now
According to Edmunds, the Hummer EV has a standard ground clearance of 10.1 inches. That’s almost an inch longer than what the standard F-150 has, and it’s over an inch longer than what other EV truck options offer. The Hummer EV has ample ground clearance in part because it’s a big car overall.
Unfortunately, the Hummer EV’s huge size, along with its vast specs, also means its price is huge too. The Hummer EV currently produces a combined 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 lb-ft of torque. Those impressive specs are paired with a 200kWh battery, giving it over 300 miles of range. All that power will cost just under $110,000.
The electric truck war is heating up and fans will have to sit and wait
As the electric truck war continues, automakers will compete to make trucks that can off-road well. That said, until these trucks come out, their ground clearance numbers aren’t known. But in the case of the Tesla Cybertruck, Tesla says the Cybertruck will have a maximum ground clearance of around 16 inches. Obviously, Tesla has to start production of the Cybertruck first before truck enthusiasts can make use of that massive ground clearance.
Tesla isn’t the only automaker making electric trucks; another electric truck with a lot of hype behind it is the Chevy Silverado EV. Since Chevy is a capable automaker, many fans expect a great EV that can off-road well and have reasonable ground clearance. Lesser-known automakers are also looking to make a name for themselves, such as the Fisker Alaska.
