Buying a subcompact SUV in 2022 is common for many consumers. However, some people want one that can go anywhere and do anything. While it’s not typical for a small SUV to have off-road capability, some are equipped for exactly that. With a name like Trailblazer, you would expect the model to be capable of blazing trails. Can the 2022 Chevy Trailblazer actually be an off-road SUV?
A Base Model Trailblazer Isn’t Off-Road Ready
Starting at $22,795, the base-model 2022 Chevy Trailblazer LS isn’t off-road ready. According to Edmunds, the cheapest version of the subcompact SUV doesn’t have any features to help it tackle dirt trails. Instead, it’s more focused on core technology and convenience elements to help it stand out from other SUVs under $25,000. For example, it has Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Wi-Fi hotspot, forward collision mitigation, lane-keep assist and automatic high beams.
Then the LT trim adds a few other niceties for the extra cost of around $2,000. With a starting MSRP of $24,995, the Trailblazer LT gets cruise control, remote ignition, heated front seats and a power driver’s seat. Additionally, roof rails, LED fog lights, heated mirrors and tinted windows are standard. As a result, the Trailblazer takes its first steps towards off-road capability. However, it’s not quite there yet.
The 2022 Chevy Trailblazer Activ is a lightweight off-roader
The first and only entry in the Trailblazer line with off-road capability is the Activ version. Starting at $26,895 MSRP, it adds a lot of stuff, some off-road focused and some not. For example, it uses the upgraded, more powerful 1.3-liter turbocharged engine and optional all-wheel drive. Plus, convenience features like a heated steering wheel, leatherette upholstery and rear seat center armrest are included.
For off-roading, a few things prepare the Trailblazer for blazing trails. First, the tires and suspension settings are better for off-roading than the other versions. Then it comes with a tow hitch receiver and underbody skid plates. Finally, the subcompact SUV gets some unique styling cues on the exterior, not to mention the two-tone roof that helps the Trailblazer Activ stand out from the crowd.
Optional packages add more

As with most vehicles, there are many optional packages to choose from. 2022 Chevy Trailblazer buyers can choose to upgrade with the Sun & Tailgate Package, Driver Confidence Package, Convenience Package, or Technology Package. The Technology package, however, is only available for RS and Activ trims, while buyers can get all the others for any version of the Trailblazer.
For off-road we recommend first and foremost the Technology Pack. It is equipped with LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, wireless smartphone charger, eight-inch touchscreen, high-resolution rear view camera and premium Bose sound system. . While nothing is necessarily geared towards off-road prowess, brighter headlights and a clear camera will certainly help on dark trails.
Can the Chevy Trailblazer actually open trails?
In conclusion, the 2022 Chevy Trailblazer is a decent lightweight off-roader. As a subcompact SUV, it won’t fit your Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, or Toyota Tacoma. Off-road capability is limited, but the Trailblazer will handle it if you’re interested in riding dirt trails. However, the rock-crawling and mud-crawling would be best left to the big boys for now.
