Chevy had no idea the nickname “Suburban” would catch on. When Chevy originally released its variation, it was a specific class of vehicle. During the early 1930s, the term “Suburban” was used to refer to a glass station wagon, and it was adopted by a wide range of automobile manufacturers, including Dodge, GMC, Chevy and Plymouth. It wasn’t until 1988 that General Motors was granted an exclusive trademark for the name “Suburban” for its first Suburban model.

A station wagon mounted on a half-ton truck chassis was the first generation Chevrolet Suburban, which was launched in 1933 but only lasted two years. Chevy introduced a new wagon version of the Suburban in 1935, which was more up-to-date (for the time). When the Chevrolet Suburban was first introduced in 1960, it was still in its fourth generation. Over the course of its 80-year production run, the Chevrolet Suburban has seen 12 distinct design incarnations.

Since its inception in 1962, the Suburban has evolved into the vehicle we know and love today. In 1994, the Suburban received revised airbags, side mirrors, and transmissions in addition to a new appearance. A data radio system, Sirius XM satellite radio, and Bose sound system were added to the Suburban in 2003, making it more up-to-date for the ninth generation of the vehicle.

In 2015, the 11th generation Suburban was unveiled to the public for the first time at the Texas State Fair. New front fascia with a chrome grille was one of the most radical redesigns. Chevrolet has also placed an emphasis on technology in this generation of Suburban, including hands-free speech recognition software, USB connections, smartphone connectivity and navigation with real-time traffic updates..

The 12th-generation Suburban was unveiled at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan, near the end of 2019. The 2021 model of the SUV would have a new chassis, independent rear suspension, and a longer wheelbase as part of the update. This year, the Suburban’s 6.2-liter V8 engine will be offered in a wider variety of trim levels. Larger 12.3-inch screens are standard on the more expensive models.
