Only one new van scored high in this important test

Everyone knows you’re supposed to wear a seatbelt in the car, but how many people do? Not enough, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). That’s why seat belt reminders are an important part of vehicle safety. Still, only one pickup got a good rating for its seatbelt reminders, while the rest have some work to do. Here’s why the 2022 Toyota Tundra topped the IIHS seatbelt recall test and is one of the safest pickup trucks, at least in that regard.

The 2022 Toyota Tundra is the only pickup truck to score well on the IIHS’ seat belt reminder test. While the safest 2022 pickup trucks tend to have good IIHS ratings, this is the only one to score well in this particular test. The IIHS tested ten pickup trucks to gauge the effectiveness of their seat belt reminders. The Tundra dominated by receiving good marks, while the rest of the trucks tested left something to be desired.

So how did he pull it off? The Toyota Tundra was to provide an “audible signal and visual alert on the dashboard screen, overhead panel or center console when the vehicle is traveling at least 6 mph and the system detects an unrestrained occupant in the seat driver or passenger or the detachment of a second row seat belt that was previously buckled.

The IIHS tested ten pickup trucks and found only the 2022 Toyota Tundra had a good rating. So what trucks didn’t? The 2022 model year Ram 1500 and Toyota Tacoma got marginal ratings. While the Ram’s alert didn’t start soon enough, the Tacoma’s didn’t last long enough. Additionally, the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz and 2022 Nissan Frontier “meet first-row requirements,” but don’t have second-row recalls.

There are five new pickups that got the worst ratings given by the IIHS. The 2022 model year Chevrolet Colorado, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ford F-150, Ford Maverick, and Ford Ranger all received poor ratings.

It’s important for pickup trucks to have these seat belt warnings in part because people in pickup trucks tend not to wear seat belts. IIHS President David Harkey said: “National observations of seat belt use show that people who drive or ride in vans are less likely to wear seat belts than occupants of other vehicles, so effective recalls are particularly important for these vehicles.

The IIHS says most popular new pickup trucks have failed its seatbelt reminder test, and that’s a huge problem. Without effective reminders, it is more difficult to keep people safe.

Safety is important, especially as vans and other vehicles get bigger and bigger. Fastening your seatbelt is an important part of being as safe as possible on the roads. Seat belt reminders are an important part of truck safety.
