Car enthusiasts who remember muscle trucks from the 90s will love the Ram 1500 TRX. Not only is the high-performance pickup reminiscent of street trucks such as the GMC Syclone and Dodge Dakota R / T, it is also an all-terrain truck.
Construction of the truck line began in 1981 when Lee Iacocca, then president and CEO of Chrysler, resurrected the popular Ram logo, the TRX meets today’s craze for powerful pickups and takes things to frankly insane levels. The most notable feature of the TRX is what’s under its hood: the same Dodge Hellcat engine that resides in muscle cars and sedans like the Challenger and Charger. This engine is what sets the TRX apart from its competitors like the Ford F-150 Raptor and the Chevrolet Silverado ZR2.
Any potential performance truck buyer should consider the TRX on their shortlist of potential off-road pickups, while also considering interior features, performance specs, and anything new in 2022.
The fastest production truck in the world
Inheriting the Hellcat engine, the TRX is today the most powerful production pickup on the market. Thanks to a supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V8, the TRX develops 702 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. Those numbers far exceed the 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque of the 2021 Ford F-150 Raptor, giving the TRX a clear power advantage. An 8HP95 eight-speed automatic transmission manages gear changes via paddle shifters or a stick.
Stellantis does not hesitate to praise the performance of its pickup. The automaker hails it as “the fastest, fastest and most powerful production pickup truck in the world,” and the numbers back it up. The TRX can accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.5 seconds.
A Ram pickup with off-road references
When drivers want to go beyond the road, the TRX has what it takes to back it up. Four-wheel drive, a reinforced frame and an electronic locking rear differential are standard. It comes with a solid Dana 60 rear axle with a 3.55 ratio allowing up to 13 inches of front suspension travel, 14 inches rear. The standard 18-inch wheels are shod with 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory all-terrain tires with bead-locking wheels available for an additional $ 1,895. The TRX is only available in a 5ft 7in Crew Cab box.
Lower but decent payload and towing capacity within the Ram lineup
While it still registers impressive payload and towing capabilities (after all, this is a high-performance pickup), don’t expect it to match the Ram 1500’s other options. According to Ram, the TRX has a maximum payload of 1,310 lbs and a towing capacity of 8,100 lbs. When comparing payload and towing ratings to other Ram 1500 models, the TRX tows more than the 3.6-liter V6 available with eTorque rated at 7,740 lbs, but the 5.7-liter Hemi exceeds its 11,650 lb capacity in the Quad Cab. Buyers can add a trailer reverse steering control option for $ 495.
For an additional $ 1,690, TRX buyers will get the Towing Package package. This includes a trailer light control and a trailer brake controller, which fully integrates the vehicle and trailer brakes in tandem.
Performance-driven interior and technology
Everything inside is focused on enhancing the driver’s experience of the truck’s off-road performance and capabilities. Equipped with a flat-bottomed steering wheel, drivers will have a little more legroom. Owners have the option of configuring areas of the interior of their TRX such as the steering wheel and bucket seats with carbon fiber and Alcantara materials. The outstanding technical functionality comes in the form of a 12-inch high-definition touchscreen where drivers can access off-road performance and features.
To increase safety, buyers can take advantage of several safety options such as the Blind Spot Monitoring System for $ 595, which alerts drivers when another vehicle enters the TRX’s blind spot zone. There is also a parking assist system available for $ 445 and a panoramic vision camera system for $ 495.
New in 2022: TRX Ignition Edition
In a limited version, Ram is offering a TRX Ignition Edition for the 2022 model year. Ram takes the TRX up a notch by offering even more customization for buyers, including an Ignition Orange Paint exterior, copper interior accents and 18-inch black machine-face wheels. However, buyers will need to act quickly if they want the TRX Igniton Edition, as Ram only plans to make 875 vehicles. Similar to Hennessey Performance with its Mammoth 1000 TRX, these limited production models are meant for the reserved few and seriously improve the TRX owner’s game.
2022 Ram 1500 TRX pricing
For great performance and off-road prowess, expect to pay big bucks for the 2022 TRX with an MSRP starting at $ 72,490. There is an optional bed set that includes adjustable tie-down hooks, a bed step, and a spray-on bed liner for an additional $ 845 total. The TRX Level 1 Equipment Group is another standout package costing $ 3,495 that includes upgrades ranging from body-color door handles to front door lighting, dashboard lighting and more. .
If the Ram TRX lives up to the hype, it’ll be a pretty amazing truck. However, there are several other trucks that we prefer to spend our money on!
