Here’s our look back at the week in reverse – right here at Green Car Reports – for the week ending April 29, 2022.

In a preview of the 2023 Vinfast VF 8, the first of two electric crossovers from the Vietnamese brand supposedly heading to the US market before the end of 2022, we found a lot of work to be done to meet the aggressive schedule.

GM has announced plans to install a heat pump in each of its Ultium electric vehicles, starting with the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Lyriq, of course, and including future mainstream models like the Chevrolet Trailblazer. Nissan has already jointly developed battery cells for the pioneering Leaf electric car; now it’s following a similar philosophy for all-solid-state cells that it says are headed for a production EV in 2028. According to Nissan, they’re potentially “a game-changer for the democratization of EVs,” with the potential to double the energy density by weight, charge in a third of the time, and cost $75/kWh, which would change the math for large electric pickups and SUVs in particular.

Ford confirmed this week the start of production of the 2022 F-150 Lightning electric pickup, although in an odd twist orders are not currently being taken for the truck. Ford has said it will expand production of the Lightning to 150,000 units per year in 2023, and CEO Jim Farley has separately confirmed that the Tennessee-built consumer electric truck slated for production from 2024 will not succeed the Lightning. but will add to it.

The Subaru Solterra EV starts at a higher price than its Toyota BZ4X cousin, Subaru confirmed with full details released earlier in the week. Compared to the BZ4X, the Solterra will only be offered as an all-wheel-drive version; but it will be offered in all 50 states, and buyers will be able to claim the full $7,500 EV tax credit without worrying about an ongoing phase-out.

The 2023 Polestar 2 range could benefit from greater range, including more real range thanks to an improved heat pump, as well as an improved cabin filter, removable sun visor and a new set of colors and of wheel designs. And buyers will get a car with an even lower carbon footprint than before, the company boasts.

The Saudi government has confirmed that it will purchase up to 100,000 Lucid electric vehicles over a 10-year period, with deliveries beginning in the second quarter of 2023.
