What are the best diesel trucks?

Gasoline prices are in the headlines and on everyone’s mind these days. With no immediate solution to the high prices at the pump, many consumers wonder if it’s cheaper to opt for diesel-powered pickups. Although gasoline and diesel engines work on the same principle, they are very different.

Both gasoline and diesel engines rely on combustion. However, it is the way in which this combustion is carried out that is different. The gasoline engine ignites due to spark plugs, while the diesel engine goes through a compression process that heats the air hot enough to ignite the fuel. Diesel fuel is also more energy dense and tends to be more fuel efficient than gas.

Now that you’re considering going diesel, you’ll need a list of the best pickup trucks to narrow down your search. These diesel trucks should be on your list based on horsepower, torque, towing capacity, and combined MPG ratings.

1.Chevrolet Silverado 1500

Equip your Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with an optional Duramax diesel and you’ve got the best diesel pickup you can buy right now, according to iSeeCars. You can get a turbomax diesel engine on Chevy’s LT, RST, LTZ and High Country trim levels. These trucks are the best, mainly due to their estimated fuel economy ratings of 27 mpg combined. Plus, as Cenex points out, that’s probably the biggest benefit of going diesel in the first place.

You will also appreciate the Chevy Silverado 1500 because of its chops. It can harness 277 horsepower and the diesel has a maximum towing capacity of 9,500 lbs. With a peak torque of 460 lb-ft, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a job the Silverado 1500 diesel can’t handle.

2. Ford F-150

The Ford F-150 is on several lists of the best diesel trucks. It earns a combined fuel economy of 23 mpg, which is pretty impressive for a full-size pickup. It’s slotted for 250 horsepower, delivers 440 lb-ft of torque, and can tow up to 12,100 lbs.

With the 3.0-liter turbocharged Power Stroke six-cylinder engine and 10-speed automatic transmission, nothing will stop you. But beware, this engine is not available beyond the 2021 model year. So you will probably have to find a used model to take advantage of these diesel advantages.

3.GMC Sierra 1500

It may be the Silverado’s cousin, but the GMC Sierra 1500 brings something new to the table. Some new Sierra pickup models come with a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine mated to the 10-speed automatic transmission. That translates to a combined 26 mpg and 277 horsepower, with 460 lb-ft of torque. It will also tow up to 9,500 lbs, making it easy to get around any weekend warriors you might have.

4.GMC Canyon

If you don’t like full-size trucks, you can check out the GMC Canyon with its optional Duramax diesel engine. It’s by far the most efficient of this model, with a combined 23 mpg. This turbodiesel can tow 7,700 pounds, which Nexstar says is more than double what the base engine can do. You can only get the diesel engine with a crew cab, but you probably won’t mind considering the 186 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. You’ll also appreciate the price, with the average cost ranging between $35,900 and $37,713.

5.Chevrolet Colorado

The Chevrolet Colorado makes it into this list of the best diesel pickups to consider, ranking fifth. Nearly identical to its GMC Canyon counterpart, the Colorado can be had with the turbodiesel engine and a maximum towing capacity of 7,700. It also achieves a combined 23 mpg and can be had for less than its GMC cousin, within a range prices of $34,700 and $35,591.

If diesel sounds more appealing to you, take a look at some of these pickups that are generally ranked as the best to consider. The Ram 1500 and Nissan Titan XD also deserve honorable mentions. However, to save at the pump without compromising power, these trucks are winners.
